Prior to joining Care Capital, Dr. Mandel had a
distinguished 39 year career at Merck, retiring as Vice President of
External Scientific Affairs in 2003. He co-established the Company’s
licensing function, an effort which resulted in the licensure of
several entities and the establishment of many collaborations from
which marketed products emerged, including Pepcid, Fosamax, and
Cozaar. He also developed the University Relations function in which
a range of direct funding and other initiatives with academia were
expanded. Prior to these responsibilities, Dr. Mandel was Director
of Biochemistry.
Dr. Mandel holds a B.S. degree in Pharmacy and a Ph.D. degree in
Biochemistry, both from Columbia University. He was Assistant
Professor of Biochemistry and Pharmacology at the Pharmacy College
before joining Merck. He was the recipient of fellowships and
research grants while in academia, and co-authored 44 scientific papers
and 7 patents.
